Peter Robbins – Media, Ridicule and the CIA: How the Subject of UFOs was Made to Look Ridiculous and Why the Skewed Reporting Persists

Robbins begins his talk highlighting the few cases of political figures embracing the UFO question such as Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and even Gerald Ford who pursued the topic while in Congress.  He goes on to expand on the situation of officials who come forward  but are then pressured to disavow the topic.  Bill Richardson is the chief example here.

Next he moves on media coverage of UFO events.  First up – the “Battle of Los Angeles” of 1942 (more info).  For the next few minutes he presents newspaper articles from the same period that tend to sensationalize UFO sightings.  The pattern seems to be if there’s a real story the newspapers mock it and if it’s an obvious fake, they embrace it.

Intertwined with these media examples, Robbins showcases FBI and USAF memos related to the UFO phenomenon including notes from J. Edgar Hoover and Nathan Twining.  The point – publicly the issue is dismissed but within the bowels of the government, a race is on to find the truth.
